The Project.
As Sydney Fish Market prepared for its momentous relocation and upgrade, Moits proudly partnered with Multiplex to undertake the pivotal ‘Seawall Demolition & Revetment Works’ and ‘Demolition & Earthworks for the Box Cofferdam’.
The revitalised Sydney Fish Market promises an enhanced public space, seamlessly integrated with its surroundings. Visitors can look forward to a scenic waterfront promenade offering better access to Blackwattle Bay and connecting with nearby areas.

Our Scope.
– Demolition of existing Seawall
– Box Cofferdam dewatering
– Cut to fill of seabed mud
– Piling platform (Form, reo, pour)
– Main Cofferdam sand supply for reclamation (by barge)
– Dewatering of 2Ha basement to 4.0m below sea level
– Temporary Bridge installation
– Working at 100mm above groundwater level, Re-grading of barge placed material with swamp dozers
– Supply, place and remove surcharge loading material for seabed settlement acceleration
– Subbase construction for form-work platform
Challenges & Our Approach.
In the pre-construction phase, Moits encountered unexpected challenges when isolated test pits revealed the presence of asbestos beneath the approach slab and behind the seawall. Swiftly addressing this hurdle, we engaged an asbestos contractor to remediate the site, ensuring a clear path for the scheduled works. Post-demolition of the seawall, Moits deployed a 30T excavator to reinstate the existing batter, strategically placing fabric 1m below the mean water level at low tide to establish a stable foundation for the new seawall structure.
The construction of the Box Cofferdam followed, involving complex tasks such as dewatering, a challenging cut to fill in seabed silt, subgrade buildup with site-won material, and the placement of a road base subbase. Moits formed, reinforced, and poured concrete to create a solid base for the raker pile installation.
In the initial stages of Main Cofferdam backfilling, we leveraged the waterfront location for land reclamation, importing over 100,000T of sand via barge. After this substantial importation, Moits dewatered the 2Ha area, pumping out 100 million litres of water per day over a 10-day period, resulting in the main cofferdam base sitting just over 4.0m below sea level.
The Moits team then continued their tireless efforts at a challenging 100mm above the groundwater level, expertly re-grading the barge-placed material with swamp dozers.
