Rhodes

The Project.

Moits is proud to be delivering the bulk earthworks and shoring package for the Leeds Street, Rhodes Bay project on behalf of our client, Billbergia. Located on the Parramatta River foreshore, this exciting development will form the foundation for a significant new community precinct. As a Partial Design and Construct contract, our early works are setting the stage for future construction phases, ensuring the project begins with strong, safe, and well-planned ground conditions.

Our Scope.

Our scope of work on this project includes the bulk excavation of 50,000m³ of clay and sandstone, as well as the installation of a full-perimeter shoring system tailored to site conditions. This involves the construction of secant piles along the northern section and soldier piles along the southern section, supported by the drilling of close to 5,000 linear metres of shoring and foundation piles—delivered well ahead of program. To stabilise the excavation, more than 180 ground anchors have been installed, ensuring safe and efficient progression of works. These activities form the crucial groundwork for Billbergia’s landmark foreshore development.

Challenges & Our Approach.

One of the major challenges of the project was constructing the shoring system while accommodating a live sewer that traversed the site.

Through careful planning, sequencing, and close coordination with stakeholders, Moits was able to progress shoring works while the sewer diversion was finalised, maintaining uninterrupted service throughout.

Additionally, working adjacent to the Parramatta River required stringent environmental management—an area where Moits has excelled, completing deep excavation works without incident or impact to the surrounding environment.

These outcomes highlight our proactive approach to safety, planning, and environmental stewardship as we work towards handing over the site to Billbergia’s building team in late 2025.

A key challenge overcome on this project was delivering the shoring system while a live sewer crossed the site. Careful planning and staging allowed Moits to proceed with shoring construction while the diversion was being finalised, ensuring the sewer remained operational until the perimeter could be closed. In addition, Moits have managed a deep excavation project adjacent to the Parramatta river with zero environmental issues or incidents, demonstrating our on-going commitment to protecting the areas that we work within.
