Challenges & Our Approach.
In collaboration with Health Infrastructure and Roberts Pizzarotti, Moits developed the methodology to safely excavate a stormwater trench while maintaining friable asbestos, heavy metals and dioxins as a result of Agent Orange contamination.
Moits implemented decontamination units, containment scaffolding, air-monitoring, dust control ring, a temporary roadway, sheetpiling to retain the trench, dewatering, wheelwash bath to decontaminate fleet leaving site, liquid waste removal and hazardous material transport.
The severity of the on-site contamination required all personnel to complete training for safe work practices with dioxins as well as regular and ongoing reviews of methodology and SWMS.
Following excavation, the trench was lined with multiple layers of orange marker geofabric as well as placement of ballast and subbase.
The project unfolded alongside the live Concord Hospital premises, necessitating Moits to exercise heightened sensitivity to noise and dust control measures.
Simultaneously, we managed traffic flow, ensuring minimal disruption to the daily operations of visitors and the hospital’s transport vehicles.
Once clearance for the area was achieved, the trench was handed over to the stormwater contractor for works to continue.
